A laptop and notes on the costs of starting an Etsy shop
Planning the budget for an Etsy shop

Opening an Etsy shop is only one part of the cost of starting to sell. For a maker or manufacturer, the real budget also includes product preparation, packaging, delivery, your time and a reserve for things that do not go to plan. Looking only at the listing fee gives you an incomplete picture.

I created CopperAndCraft and built its Etsy shop from scratch. Since 2018, I have developed the range and sold my own copper and brass products internationally. That experience informs the questions below. The fee figures reflect the source review dated 13 October 2026; check Etsy’s current terms before making a financial decision. Examples are illustrative, not a forecast of your costs or profit.

Separate your budget into three parts

First comes preparation: photographs, descriptions, translations, product specifications and shop setup. Second are platform fees associated with publishing listings and processing sales. Third are the costs of making, packing and delivering the product, including customer service. Leaving out any of these makes running a shop look cheaper than it is.

Give your own time a value, even when you do everything yourself. Ten hours spent rewriting descriptions still compete with production and fulfilling orders. Record cash expenses and working hours separately. This also makes it easier to decide what to do yourself and where outside help would be useful.

Which Etsy fees should you include?

ItemRate or principle
Shop setupA one-time setup fee may be shown during registration.
Listing feeUS$0.20 per listing. Listings normally last four months; renewals and additional quantities sold can generate further fees.
Transaction fee6.5% of the item price and the delivery and gift-wrapping charges you collect.
Etsy Payments: Polish bank account example4% plus €0.30 per transaction, separate from the transaction fee.
Etsy currency conversion2.5% when the listing currency differs from the payment account currency.

Payment processing rates depend on the country of your bank account. The Polish example above is not a universal rate for English-speaking sellers. Check the Etsy Fees & Payments Policy and payment processing fee table. Fee calculations can also involve taxes, depending on the transaction. This overview is not a complete accounting statement.

Ten listings and several hundred products

At US$0.20 each, initially publishing ten listings costs US$2, fifty costs US$10 and one hundred costs US$20. These figures exclude renewals, taxes and other services. They are not total shop launch budgets. With a larger catalogue, the main increase is often the work needed to prepare images, variations and accurate information.

CopperAndCraft grew gradually. By the later Shopify project, its Etsy catalogue contained approximately 480–540 listings. A new seller does not need to start at that scale. A coherent selection that you can photograph, price and produce reliably is a more manageable starting point. Ten carefully prepared listings are a possible project scope, not an Etsy requirement or a promise of sales.

A simplified cost example for one order

Suppose a product costs €100 and the buyer pays €20 for delivery. Using €120 as the simplified calculation base, the 6.5% transaction fee is €7.80. At the Polish payment processing rate, 4% plus €0.30 is €5.10. Those two charges total €12.90.

The listing or renewal fee comes on top, with advertising, conversion charges and taxes where applicable. The example leaves out buyer taxes, refunds and special cases. The amount remaining after €12.90 is not profit: materials, labour, packaging and the carrier still need to be paid. Money collected for delivery is not automatically a cost-free pass-through.

Advertising creates a separate cost scenario

Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads are different programmes. Etsy Ads uses a budget set in your account. Offsite Ads charges apply to attributed orders under the programme’s rules. The standard rate is 15%; after reaching the US$10,000 sales threshold over a consecutive 365-day period, the rate is 12% and participation becomes mandatory under those rules. The fee for one attributed order is capped at US$100. Consult Etsy’s Offsite Ads guidance for the conditions.

In the €120 example, an additional 15% would be €18. This is a useful margin stress test even though not every order attracts that fee. Prepare scenarios with and without advertising rather than relying on the cheapest possible outcome. Paid traffic cannot fix missing dimensions, confusing variations or an unclear delivery promise.

Photos and descriptions are part of product preparation

A buyer abroad cannot touch the material before ordering. Images and words need to explain its texture, scale, finish and use. For CopperAndCraft, a room photograph shows the effect of a metal decoration, while a close-up explains the surface. Neither replaces accurate dimensions and a clear statement of what is included.

Before arranging photography, list the questions customers need answered. Is the price for one piece or a set? What does the back look like? How is it installed? Can the finish vary? Let those questions determine the required images. The guide to writing Etsy product descriptions provides a practical structure for the accompanying text.

Calculate the cost of delivering it safely

Measure and weigh the finished parcel, not just the product. Include the box or crate, protective materials, packing time, labels and any insurance you choose. Different product sizes may require different packing methods and separate calculations. A shipping estimate for an unpacked object can be misleading.

With CopperAndCraft, I have shipped more than 4,000 products worldwide, including to the USA. A repeatable packing process matters, but no single carrier is right for every product. Keep production time distinct from transit time and avoid promising a delivery date you cannot control. Allow time for questions, custom drawings and occasional problems as part of the service you provide.

Check whether Etsy fits your product

Being a manufacturer does not automatically make every product suitable for Etsy. Check the Etsy Creativity Standards against what you sell and how it is made. An industrial range that requires drawings, batch quantities and individual quotations may be better served first by a manufacturer website or B2B catalogue.

Turn the figures into a launch plan

Start with a small product spreadsheet: production cost, working time, packaging, variations, proposed price and delivery destinations. Mark missing images and specifications. Separate one-off preparation from recurring costs and keep the original currency of fees alongside your working currency. Discuss tax and accounting treatment with your accountant for your own circumstances.

If your product is ready but the shop needs organising, Etsy Start covers a defined setup and listing scope. Platform fees and separately agreed work remain additional. If the shop already exists, begin with an Etsy audit or the guide to improving existing listings. The useful budget is the one in which each expense has a clear purpose.
