An Etsy shop can attract visitors without receiving many orders. Sometimes the listing leaves buyers unsure about sizes, variations or delivery. That does not automatically mean the description is at fault: price, audience fit and demand also matter. Before rewriting the whole shop, review a few listings and identify the uncertainty.
The approach below draws on CopperAndCraft, the brand and Etsy shop I built from the ground up. It is a practical way to organise improvements, not a promise of a particular increase in sales.
What commonly weakens an Etsy listing?
Open a listing on your phone and try to set aside everything you know as its maker. Within a few seconds, is it clear what somebody can buy? Start with these checks:
- A vague title: general claims take the place of the product name and relevant characteristics.
- Photographs without context: an attractive close-up, but no complete view, sense of scale or example of use.
- An incomplete description: the brand story crowds out dimensions, installation and package contents.
- Inaccurate attributes and tags: empty fields or terms that do not describe the item.
- Inconsistent presentation: variation names differ between the gallery, description and purchase options.
Record observations you can act on. “There is no photograph of the panel’s back” is more useful than “the images are poor”. For a wider diagnosis, read what to check in an Etsy audit. Separating a visibility problem from a purchasing problem makes the first change easier to choose.
Title: identify the product clearly
Start with the specific item. Add its material or a defining feature, followed by its use or style if that helps a buyer understand it. You do not need every possible description in one title. The opening should make sense even when only part of it is visible.
Here is an original example for decorative wall art:
- Vague: “Beautiful decoration, unique gift, modern design for your home”.
- More informative: “Patinated Copper Wall Panel, 60 × 40 cm, Living Room Wall Art”.
The second names the object and gives checkable details. The dimensions are illustrative: use your actual measurements and suitable units. If a listing offers several sizes, avoid implying that the lowest displayed price buys the largest panel.
Etsy’s title guidance emphasises clear product names and relevant characteristics. Treat the title as readable information, rather than a container for every keyword. When selling in another language, write naturally for that audience instead of translating search phrases word for word.
Photographs: show what the buyer needs to assess
The main image should identify what is for sale. Check it as a small thumbnail: does the product remain clear, or disappear into its surroundings? Subsequent images should answer different questions, rather than repeat almost the same view.
- The whole product against a simple background: make its shape easy to assess.
- The product in use or in a setting: explain its application and relationship to its surroundings.
- Material and finish details: show texture, edges, sheen, joints or patina.
- Scale: include a hand or familiar object where appropriate, while stating precise measurements separately.
- Variations: compare the available options using the same names as the purchase selector.
A room photograph of a CopperAndCraft decoration does not, by itself, explain thickness, construction or mounting. Show the side and back where those details matter. Colour corrections should preserve the actual appearance. The product photography guide explains how to plan the gallery and prepare files.
Description: answer the essential questions
Use the first sentences to explain what the product is, what it is for and what the selected variation includes. The making process and brand story can follow. Short paragraphs and a clear specification list help people find answers on a phone.
- What is being sold: one panel, a complete set or a material sample.
- Material and construction: the surface, backing and finish.
- Dimensions: width, height and thickness, using units appropriate to the audience.
- Use and installation: fixings, necessary accessories and relevant limitations.
- Package contents: what is supplied and what the buyer must obtain separately.
- Fulfilment and delivery: distinguish production time from estimated transit time and summarise returns consistently with the shop’s policies.
With natural patina, explain whether colour patterns vary between pieces. If buyers repeatedly ask the same question, check whether its answer is visible and clear. General claims of quality cannot replace that information. The guide to writing Etsy descriptions offers a reusable structure.
Attributes and tags: relevance comes first
Select an accurate category and complete relevant attributes such as material, colour and size. These provide structured information and help match listings to searches. Do not select a characteristic merely because it seems popular; it must describe the actual product.
Tags let you describe the item through additional phrases. Etsy recommends using all 13 tags and varied, multi-word terms. Rather than filling several spaces with near-identical phrases, consider relevant product names, materials, techniques and uses. Each one should accurately describe what you sell.
There is no blanket rule that a word in the title cannot also appear in a tag. Avoid unnecessary repetition between tags and exact duplication of categories and attributes. Do not remove a useful phrase solely because it also appears in the title. See Etsy’s official Keywords 101 guide for the underlying guidance.
A practical order for making changes
If a listing has several obvious gaps, the sequence below provides a starting point. It is a working order, not a ranking of Etsy search factors.
- Title: identify the item and clarify its essential characteristics.
- Main photograph: make the product recognisable in a thumbnail.
- Opening description and dimensions: resolve uncertainty about the product and selected variation.
- Remaining images: add scale, details, use and differences between options.
- Attributes and tags: complete missing information and review the relevance of the phrases.
Adapt this order to the evidence. If relevant visitors already reach the listing but regularly ask about installation, start with installation. Correct a wrong category or inaccurate dimension immediately. Accuracy should not wait for a planned writing exercise.
Save the original listing and record when changes go live. Compare similar periods and traffic sources. A handful of visits is too little evidence to judge success, and seasonality, advertising or availability may change the picture. If you rewrite every listing at once, it becomes harder to tell which change addressed which issue.
From diagnosis to a clearer offer
If you are unsure what makes customers hesitate, begin with an audit of specific listings. If you need the changes implemented, the Etsy Listing Improvements package covers content, product information and the presentation of supplied images within an agreed scope. A new photoshoot is a separate task.
The aim is a consistent listing that helps people understand the product before ordering. Sales also depend on the item, price, market and fulfilment conditions. Clearer information is a practical improvement you can make; a fixed sales outcome is not something a listing rewrite can guarantee.
